The campaign’s goal is to heighten overall awareness of the need for increased vigilance at this time of year as, traditionally, this is the worst month for fire fatalities.
At its centre are 12 helpful tips to prevent against not only seasonal risks, but warnings to be conscious of throughout the year.
Safeathome.ca is the host site for fire departments and the public to pledge their participation in the program, but we would ask that everyone, no matter where they're from, make a pledge to go over the 12 days of holiday fire safety tips below:
Water fresh trees daily.
Check all sets of lights before decorating.
Make sure you have working smoke alarms. Remember, they wear out, so replace them every 10 years.
Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Remember, they wear out, so replace them every 7-10 years depending on the manufacturer.
Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs.
Use extension cords wisely.
Give space heaters space.
When you go out, blow out!
Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children.
Watch what you heat!
Encourage smokers to smoke outside.
