Paladin Security Operations Manager

Like many individuals working in the security industry, I started out with the intent of gaining experience for a future career in law enforcement. Despite having previously held management level positions with other security companies, my experience up to joining Paladin Security Group in 2008 had never led me to believe that the security industry would ever hold the possibility of a long-term career.

My first impression of Paladin it that it was very different from the companies I had worked for in the past. Senior management took the time to sit and talk to me, and they seemed genuinely interested in my opinions about the existing state of the company as well as my future career plans. I was very open about my intention to move into law enforcement, but for the first time I realized there was another option – that I could make a career in the private sector if I wanted.

I became a Field Manager which was a new role within our branch, so it gave me the opportunity to participate in the daily running of our operations. Paladin provided me with a work environment where I felt that I could pitch new ideas and actually have them implemented! I also saw a company that was not only interested in expanding nationwide, but in providing quality client service, as well as providing their employees the chance to grow through promotion from within. It was during this time that I made the decision that the opportunities and lifestyle available in the private sector were more appealing to me than those in traditional law enforcement.

In 2009, I was promoted to a Client Service Manager role where I had the chance to work with a number of exceptional managers, both within Paladin and at our client sites. I tried to approach every new experience with an open mind, learning what I could from each individual and developing my own management style and view on the industry. 

I’m approaching my six year anniversary with Paladin and, recently again, I was given the opportunity to take my Paladin journey to the next level when I was promoted to an Operations Manager position. Looking back, I’m amazed when I think that it was only a few years ago that I was ready to write my security career off as just a stepping stone. Although I know that I worked for everything I have, I know that I would have never had the opportunity if it wasn’t for Paladin.

While I truly believe that my journey is only starting, there are a few pieces of advice that I would give to anyone following in my footsteps:

  1.  Never rely on your past successes.
  2. Never stop pushing for improvement because things can always be improved upon.
  3.  You learn more from your mistakes than from your successes.
  4. Asking for help isn’t admitting failure.
  5. Most importantly, an open mind and a solid work ethic will take you where you want to go.
