Storm ranked among the most intense rainfalls the city has ever seen.
Another Monday was coming to an end for the Paladin Security Toronto branch earlier this month on July 8, as personnel started to trickle out of the office and mention to each other in passing that there had been severe thunderstorm warnings in the area.
In a way, everyone welcomed the possibility of some relief from the recent high temperatures and humidity we had been experiencing for the past few weeks. Besides, the same weather warnings had been repeated almost daily and, until now, there hadn't been one single drop of rain. Why would it be any different this evening?
The rest, as they say, is history as a record-breaking 100 millimetres of one-day rainfall hit the GTA that night; leaving stranded cars, flooded basements and widespread power outages in the city.
The “Toronto Flood” (or #TorontoFlood as was trending on Twitter) of that fateful day truly exemplified the resilience of Paladin’s men and women to deal with such adversity. While officials warned residents to stay at home and off the streets, Paladin Security Officers, Client Service Managers and more across the GTA responded by assisting sites affected by large-scale flooding and blackouts. Mobile and Zone Supervisors utilized their own vehicles to help transport personnel, and many employees stayed past their scheduled shifts to ensure our client sites were protected.
Paladin’s Vice President for Eastern Canada Terry Verasamy commented; “It left me with a feeling of pride to see how willing everyone was to drop what they were doing to help out. Evidence of our team's dedication could be seen across the board, from the countless extra Healthcare Security Officers who braved the flooded streets to assist - many of them having to deal with a bombardment of concerned patients and visitors, as well as the intolerable heat and humidity from the powerless air conditioners - and all the while providing professional customer care, as has come to be expected from our Paladin staff."
Our 24/7 manned Operations Centre in Toronto demonstrated its immeasurable value during emergencies as it became the central source of information flow on the progress of the storm, and assisted in coordinating the deployment of personnel to our many client facilities. One such facility, West Park Healthcare, which was dealing with power loss, relied upon our Operations Centre to provide live updates from the local power agency as it would play an integral part in their decision to evacuate the property if necessary. Thankfully, the crisis was averted, thanks in part to this real-time communications feed.
Another client site, Baycrest Health Sciences, was also dealing with power loss and the added issue of flooded emergency generators. While they were able to restore minimal power, they decided to coordinate a controlled evacuation to a local hotel, and we continue to receive commendation from Baycrest for our unwavering help and support during the emergency. Again, these are just two of the many facilities that were severely affected by the storm; with several still in recovery mode.
Toronto Operations Manager Glenn Dahiroc concluded; "As the City of Toronto and its residents recover from the unexpected impact of THE storm of 2013, it's reassuring to know that Paladin's workforce is there to respond when needed. This is yet another opportunity to commend and thank everyone involved - great job Paladin Toronto!"
Our Emergency Department was very impressed with your team's actions during last night’s various Codes, and we were extremely happy with the response to all emergencies; including re-routing access into the hospital after our triage area flooded.
Our Human Resources Manager called this morning to thank your Paladin Security Officers for assisting her daughter with a Safe Walk escort to a local hotel as she ended up stranded here after school hours last night.
Our Fire Marshall and Infection Control want to thank the entire team for their responses to the various floods and fire alarms experienced last night. Great work team!
