A unique series highlighting our teams across the country and providing a valuable insight into the security industry today.
When did you join the Paladin family?
I joined Paladin Security in Calgary in February of 2009. I started my Paladin career as a Client Service Manager and was initially tasked with the management of some of our more challenging and diverse local portfolios. This was an excellent opportunity for me to learn the industry at a fast pace, and to get to understand exactly what we mean by The Paladin Difference. Although it was challenging at the time, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!
Why did you get into the security industry and why Paladin?
After spending nearly a decade in construction management, I decided I wanted a new challenge. I was looking for a more dynamic and fluid environment where I would be afforded the opportunity to develop my skills both personally and professionally. Because I spent many years as on the other side of the business as the client, I was equipped with a rudimentary knowledge of how the security industry worked from a buyer’s standpoint, but I was intrigued to understand the inner workings of a professional security provider. After researching many different companies, I elected to apply at Paladin because of the company's reputation as “the employer of choice” for front-line Security Guard staff. I reasoned that this was a direct result of a strong, talented management team – something I wanted to be a part of.
What interests you most about your job?
That’s a great question and not an easy one to answer! There are so many interesting and rewarding aspects to my role that a quick summation would be close to impossible. If I had to narrow it down to what interests me the most, however, I would have to say it's the constant evolution of the security industry and how we, as industry leaders, have been afforded the opportunity to parlay these improvements into creating a satisfied, efficient and highly trained staff, while still delivering best-in-class client service.
How do you see the industry evolving in the future?
I see the overall gestation period of new technological advancements in security systems decreasing with clients and buyers as security becomes more prevalent and necessary. The industry's increasing sophistication is something that is incumbent upon not only providers like Paladin to stay abreast of, but also, and as importantly in some respects, the buyers of security services. The latter is especially so essential because the more educated and informed potential clients are about what's new and exciting in the industry, the better chance we will have to procure their business because Paladin invests so heavily in innovative security solutions. We are better positioned in the various industries we serve nationwide than any of our competitors and so we can offer a better overall service delivery, resulting in more business – which is always a good thing!
What advice would you give anyone entering the security industry today?
There is a unique opportunity in the security sector that does not exist in many other fields; this is the ability to transform a job into a career, and to have a great time doing it. Because security is so diverse, there truly is something for everyone. If you are passionate, and take great pride in a job well done, then with security you will have the rare ability to be the author of your own destiny. My advice, simply, is to take your job seriously, work hard, continually invest in yourself through company-paid training and education, help those around you, and make your career exactly what you want it to be.
