Leo Hutchings, Security Officer, St. John's Newfoundland
Extraordinary Moment
In January of 2016, Paladin Security Officer Leo Hutchings was on his way home from a late shift driving through Butter Pot Provincial Park in Newfoundland; it was snowing and the road conditions were slushy. A fast moving car passed Leo and started to hydroplane, careened into the median, and rolled at least four times landing on its roof.
Leo pulled over and ran toward the twisted, smoking vehicle. He began frantically heaving snow off the car, and worried about the possibility of fire. Seeing two male passengers trapped inside, Leo smashed the window while one passenger managed to haul himself out and Leo instructed him to get to his car back on the road. The second passenger had injured his leg and needed more support, Leo pulled the injured male through the window. Once the passenger was safely out of the smoking vehicle, Leo inspected the leg while the uninjured passenger called the RCMP.
The passengers were brothers and their frantic mother soon arrived to meet her sons. Leo returned to work early the next morning with a proud smile on his face. He spoke of the incident sharing modestly,
My children think I am a hero, but it’s really no big deal, it was just my instinct. As soon as I witnessed the accident, I ran to help – it didn’t sink in until the next day when I was back at work. My Paladin team is a family and they motivate me every day. Through that, we’ve learned to protect one another and provide people with support when they are in need.
Paladin Security’s commitment to the communities in which we operate is unmatched. We support our clients by integrating state-of-the-art technologies with our highly trained and passionate officers. As our company continues to grow across Canada, it is our people like Leo who make the Paladin difference.
