Paladin Security Officer Pamela Sharif on Women in Security

1. How long have you worked in security & what drew you to the industry?
   I have worked for Paladin Security Vancouver for over ten years, specializing in healthcare security. I was drawn to the industry due to necessity. I was in a life transition with my family and I needed a job that would allow me to support my children. It was very challenging to find a position at the time when I did not have a lot of experience or education. Paladin Security was the first company to give me the opportunity and training to have a successful career and provide for my family.
2. What unique traits do you feel women bring to security?
   Women bring many traits to the security. We are nurturing by nature; we bring a different form of sensitivity and empathy. Women also tend to defuse, rather than escalate, because it is in our nature to create calm. We build team, like we would a family; by creating peace and safety.
3. Why are women in leadership roles so important for the growth of the industry?
   Women in leadership roles is important in the industry as it shows that women are versatile and capable. There are both men and women on this planet and we need both genders in security to enable a fully supportive team to our clients. Furthermore, seeing women in leadership roles inspires younger women to reach for more.
4. How do you see our roles evolving in the future?
   I see more and more women taking interest in the industry. Having an even stronger female presence will ensure teams are working together to bring peace and safety to any location that we are hired to protect.
5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given that you’d like to pass on to women following in your footsteps?
   Don’t allow yourself to feel intimidated. You do possess the skills and strengths required to do the job. Believe in yourself and don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t.
