Popular for its rushing waters and picturesque views, Niagara Falls is one of the top tourist destinations shared between two countries and attracts millions of tourists every year.
Generally speaking, Niagara is a safe place to visit and poses very little serious threats to safety and well-being of visitors. With technical safety precautions taken (i.e., wearing safe shoes, and staying at a safe distance from the edge) petty crime is still something of an issue as is to be expected in any tourist destinations.
Visitors can decrease their chances of being targeted by criminals by having a high level of awareness:
- Keep cash an valuables in hard to reach places for pickpockets
- Bag snatchers can be deterred by over-the-head strap bags, and do not leave bags unattended, on the floor, or the back of a chair in a restaurant
- Avoid leaving items of value on display in your parked vehicle
Like most towns and cities, there are unsafe spots for tourists to be walking around in after dark. Consult with your hotel concierge on where "safe zones" after dark are. One of the safe zones that is highly recommended is between the casino and Niagara Falls itself as it is one of the well-lit areas. The lights by the Falls are turned off at midnight, though tourists can still be found walking around then. It's best to be on guard at all times and stay in well-lit areas in order to feel safe in Niagara Falls.
