Security assessments are conducted regularly by organizations as part of their risk assessment procedures, but these assessment results can only be successful if these results are utilized effectively.
A security program is more than just scheduling or ensuring that staff arrive on site in a timely manner. It is more than the cameras installed, or access cards given to staff. A well-functioning security program contributes to a culture of safety that fosters positive change, enhances security response and establishes overall safety for the occupants. It is a program where each individual within the organization takes responsibility and contributes by reporting concerns when they observe potential hazards.
The foundation of a successful security program is a qualified team that can ensure timely emergency responses, identification of hazards, and quality customer service. However, this team will not succeed without adequate support, or if there is no trust in their ability. Safety is further enhanced by a properly maintained facility, which invites positive usage of space. The culture of safety must be maintained and reinforced to be successful.
Technology is an important tool that assists security teams in conducting their duties. However, as it develops, the methods and tactics in which technology is used will change strategically. Well integrated security technology enhances security services as it allows for prompt emergency response and can be utilized for investigative purposes.
Security assessments play a significant role both during a building’s design stage as well as during a system upgrade. It is crucial to have an actionable plan for system maintenance.
