Back to School: Campus Security 101

As summer break comes to an end, students head off on exciting new adventures and discoveries within their colleges and universities.

The beginning of semester is an overwhelming time; sorting classes, schedules, and also finding time to participate in the social events!

Amid this busy time, safety and campus security practices are often pushed to the back of students’ minds. It is easy to overlook the many dangers that are hidden throughout a campus.

Paladin is partnered with more than 30 college and university campuses in four provinces across Canada. We have a specialized focus on campus security and have unparalleled expertise and experience in this dynamic field. Through that expertise, we have prepared a few quick tips on campus security for those headed back to school this fall.

Never Walk Alone

  • The buddy system is an old technique that never fails. A person walking alone is far more likely to be attacked than a person amongst a group. It is much more difficult to control and account for the reactions of multiple people than it is to control a single person. Coordinate routes with friends to meet before and after classes that end later in the evenings. Many institutions even offer free safe escort programs to students – take advantage!

Heads Up, Devices Down

  • This is not a tip for your posture – staying alert and acknowledging your surroundings is crucial to your safety on campus. Even though time is minimal and rushing to classes is often the only break to catch up on messages, social media, and even studying, you put yourself at risk. Being completely oblivious to what is going on around you make you an easy target for an attacker to approach.

Familiarize yourself with school safety policies

  • Take time to investigate the safety procedures your school has in place. Many post-secondary institutions offer free safe escort services, night shuttles, and emergency panic buttons in well-lit areas. Of course, there are campus patrols to support safety needs as well. Being aware of what is available to keep you safe will ensure you make informed choices.

Follow these simple tips and create a simple safety plan to stay safe this semester!

Paladin Security provides a comprehensive range of protective services to post-secondary institutions throughout Canada. Our best practices have been developed by working as partners with our clients from coast to coast. Services provided at these institutions include Security Officers, alarm systems, response, monitoring, emergency management, and business continuity.
