May 6 - 12 marks Canada's 23rd annual Emergency Preparedness Week. The theme of the week this year is "Be Emergency Ready," which focuses on being proactive and ensuring your family's readiness in the event of an emergency or disaster.
Canada's first Wireless Public Alerting tests will be issued this year, which serves as an expansion of the National Public Alerting System. This new functionality will help ensure Canadians have access to life-saving alerts immediately on their mobile devices in case of an emergency. Visit alertready.ca to check your smartphone's capability.
Emergency Preparedness Week is a time to recognize and appreciate the hard work put in my first responders, emergency management professionals and volunteers. Additionally, this year the first recipients of the Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award will be honoured in the spring.
With the increasing frequency of disasters and emergencies, Canada has taken a proactive approach to emergency management, and all Canadians should take action to become more emergency ready. Visit the EP Week website for additional information on how you and your family can be better prepared.
