Halloween Safety Tips
for the Whole Family

Halloween is here and children everywhere are gearing up for costumes and candy. With that in mind, we've prepared a list of tips to help ensure a safe and fun experience for you and your family.

Be mindful of hazards

With an increased number fire hazards present on Halloween, such as candles and jack-o-lanterns, it is important to be mindful of long flowing fabrics or props in close proximity to flame. Choosing costumes and accessories labelled as flame-resistant is highly advised.

Wear bright colours and reflective tape for visibility

Many streets can be poorly lit and crowded so wearing costumes with bright colours and reflective tape increases safety at night. Additionally, each child should have a flashlight with them. If driving on Halloween, go slowly and pay extra attention.

Wear make-up or face paint instead of improperly fitted masks

Off the shelf rubber masks can make breathing and visibility difficult if they are not sized correctly for your child. Using face paint of other forms of make-up provides a much safer solution.

Let children draw pumpkin designs but have an adult do the carving

Involve your kids in the creative process when it comes to designing jack-o-lanterns. Allow them to draw the design or choose the stencil, but make sure an adult handles the use of any sharp objects when carving them out.

Go trick or treating with your child until they are old enough to go with friends

Once they no longer need parental supervision, instruct them to stay in well-lit areas, only visit homes with outdoor lights on, and not to go inside houses or cars.

Inspect the items your child brings home

Examine candy and treats for opened packaging and dangerous objects before children are allowed to eat them. Check toys or novelty items for small parts and be mindful of choking hazards.

With these simple tips in mind, we hope everyone has a safe Halloween!
