There’s no doubt that working in security can be a very rewarding career, as we explored in our past blog; why should you become a security officer. But a lot of people still ask the questions: Is a security guard a good job? Where can a security guard work? And what career options can you explore as a security guard?

The short answer; there’s an enormous number of possible avenues that stem from a career in security. It really depends on what you want to do in the future.

SECURITY CAN LEAD TO ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES

An entry-level job in the security-industry nowadays can offer you a number of lucrative career choices. Like any career, the profession of security has evolved to a point that has multiple domains of application. Each of these domains have the potential to promise you careers such as:

Cyber-security specialist:

With the rise of cyber-crime such as data breach, piracy, hacking, identity theft, and banking frauds; the demand for cyber-security specialists are becoming endless. Geared with relatable experience along with the right certifications, you can achieve your dreams to work as an expert in preventing cyber-crimes.

Armed guard (for schools, valuable transfers, court officer, or even nuclear facilities):

There is a constant need for special constables in various post-secondary campuses, public transit stations, courts, and correctional facilities etc. Special constables are often commissioned by the municipality or city to enforce by-laws or even laws in a limited area. Be a part of the team that specializes in certain sector to offer your support to the region!

Border security:

Imagine working as the first line of defense for your nation! The prestige and perks that a career choice such as this brings is priceless and involves a high level of interaction with the public and other criminal justice agencies.

Private security consultant:

Seen the movie The Hitman’s Bodyguard by Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson? Exactly! Provide a high-profile security detail to a politician, celebrity, or just any VIP! If you really have the knack for physical security and earn the right kind of reputation through the security-industry’s network; starting as a security guard is your foot in the door toward becoming a private security consultant.

Correctional officer:

Correctional officers play an important role in shaping our community. Become a correctional officer to facilitate safe control and effective rehabilitation efforts to those sentenced or awaiting trial. One of the most anticipated career choices (after policing) for former security guards is to become correctional officers.

Fire protection specialists:

A tiny spark of fire somewhere can lead to significant property damage and even loss of life. Fire protection specialists bear that responsibility to specialize in recognizing fire hazards and mitigating the risks. With the insurance industries heavily involved in providing corporations guidance on protecting their assets, fire services, including watches are becoming more and more in demand; and professionals who can anticipate such disasters to prevent it from happening – even more!

Private detective or investigator (you would need separate licensing to practice investigations):

If you have the innate ability, curious mind and interest in piecing together challenging facts and circumstances – becoming a private investigator is the way to go. However, certain provinces require you to have a separate license (private investigator license) that can be paired with security guard license. So, in case you want to keep that option open, you might want to consider obtaining a “dual license” instead.

Policing:

Ever wondered what might be the best way to contribute to the society you live in? Become a police officer and prevent and respond to crimes in your neighborhood so that your loved ones, friends and neighbours can live in a safer community. Learn how you can prepare for a career in law enforcement here.

Upper-level security management roles in private security firms:

In any private security firm, there is a management team that runs the business and oversees the operation. Security guards take direction from leaders across the security company, while they are on duty. Working as a security guard is almost a guaranteed pre-requisite to becoming a part of the management team. With the right kind of attitude, personality, and qualifications, you can be a part of the leadership team too! Paladin Security’s 'promotion from within' program is a glaring example of that.

IS A SECURITY GUARD ROLE A GOOD JOB?

In a nutshell, yes – absolutely! Pursuing a career as a security guard can open doors to limitless possibilities. However, do plan ahead and try your best to align your abilities with interest in picking the right path.
