We are honoured to announce that Security Officer Bradlee MacKenzie was awarded the Medal of Merit by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) on September 1, 2020.

Healthcare Security Officer, Bradlee MacKenzie

As a Healthcare Security Officer, Bradlee has been trained to adapt quickly and efficiently to situations, which are often complex and always changing. Not only does Bradlee provide exceptional protection services, but he is also the first point of contact that patients and family members have when they enter the hospital. As a result, Bradlee has developed incredible customer service skills and a positive attitude to go above and beyond his duties, in order to assist those in need.

In June of 2019, Bradlee demonstrated those very skills at a local hospital in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Saving an Individual’s Life

During his shift, a patient approached Bradlee and requested his assistance to help locate her boyfriend. Within seconds of searching outside of the hospital, Bradlee and the patient discovered her boyfriend with a belt around his neck in a construction area adjacent to the hospital. The belt was secured around a 2x4, leaving the male dangling in an attempt to choke himself.

Bradlee immediately jumped into action and ran over to the male to release tension on their neck and throat. He then made the quick decision to call in for additional support. Once support arrived, Bradlee attempted to remove the belt from the male’s neck but deemed it impossible since the belt was too tight. Without hesitation, Bradlee switched gears and began climbing to the top of the 2x4. Once he reached the top, Bradlee applied force to break the clip, which the belt was attached to. Making the on-the-spot decision to break the actual support mechanism after realizing he could not remove the belt from the male’s neck, is what likely saved the male’s life.

IAHSS Medal of Merit

Kelowna Branch Manager, Jason Davis, nominated Bradlee MacKenzie for the IAHSS Medal of Merit as a result of his heroic actions, which were above and beyond the call of duty. On September 1, 2020, Bradlee was presented with the prestigious award at the IAHSS Foundation Awards 2020 via Facebook Live.

We would like to congratulate Bradlee MacKenzie for receiving the IAHSS Medal of Merit. According to their website, the “Medal of Merit is presented to an individual who distinguishes himself/herself in the performance of duty by an act of personal fortitude above and beyond the call of duty not taken at the risk of his/her own life.”
