How long have you been with the Paladin family?
I've been with the Paladin family since mid-November 2016. In late May 2017, I was appointed Site Supervisor of Security at 7-eleven International Village.
Why did you get into the Security Industry and why did you choose Paladin?
I chose the Security Industry because I have a passion to protect people and what's important to people. The industry seemed to offer the best opportunity for me to harness this passion and utilize the skills I developed in a previous occupation. For several years, I was a Park Officer and over the years I've developed the skills to ensure the safety of people and the protection of assets and/or resources.
I chose Paladin Security because this company was the only one to speak of its awards and recognition.
What interests you most about your job?
What interests me the most about my job in the Downtown East side Area, is the personal development that can and has occurred for me. I deal with people in the most unfortunate circumstances like homelessness, addiction, mental illness, etc. Through my own process of learning on the job and seeing what is most effective in gaining compliance and maintaining safety, it is kindness and keeping composure that seem to be the best tools. For me, kindness and staying composed comes from a place where I have compassion for these less fortunate people. And I believe that having this compassion, on a daily basis, has affected me in a positive way. That is what I find interesting... how this job has enhanced me on a personal level.
What advice would you give someone entering in the security industry today?
I think the most valuable advice I can give to someone entering the industry today is to trust your gut, trust your instincts. Even with the greatest observation skills, security officers do not see everything. Certain elements of a situation or an individual can be hidden. That being said, we can sense on some level that something just isn't right or is dangerous. Pay attention to that.
How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
To maintain a health work-life balance, I train in Kali, a Philippine Martial Art. I occasionally spend time in nature, I really enjoy hiking. I have a spiritual practice, meditation is important. Also, it's very important to spend time with friends.
What does "The Paladin Difference" mean to you?
For me, "The Paladin Difference" means that this company really does see the value of its employees. When I applied at a career fair, management staff took a good look at my resume. They carefully considered my work experience and saw my potential. They placed me in a division of Paladin Security where they and I would be happy. Since being hired, I've received additional training courses for professional development and personal safety to help ensure I do my job in the best possible way.
Furthermore, there is great opportunity to progress and move up with Paladin. Certain things like this gives me the impression that Paladin does believe in its employees, that they invest in their people. In a way, I have a greater desire to excel in my position because I am seen as someone of value. I cannot say the same for the other jobs I've had.
