Loss Prevention Security: Paladin Perspectives

We recently spoke with Lomanpreet Kaur, a Loss Prevention Officer (LPO), to discover her perspective on working in the cornerstone of Paladin’s retail security program.

In November of 2018, Lomanpreet applied for an LPO position at Paladin Security. With her outgoing demeanor, willingness to take on new challenges, and strong interest in law enforcement, Lomanpreet successfully secured the job.

Becoming a police officer has always been a career goal of mine. A few of my friends who were already working at Paladin, strongly advised me to apply so that I could gain relevant skills for law enforcement. Before applying, I checked online reviews and was instantly drawn to the fact that Paladin provides company-paid training.

The Duties of Loss Prevention

There are many security measures to protect offices and stores from theft and robbery, increase safety, secure business assets, and provide peace of mind. One security measurement often employed is the presence of professional security guards. Companies will use loss prevention services to do just as their title suggests, prevent losses. Common company losses that are deliberately caused by individuals, include:

• Fraud

• Abuse
• Misconduct

As an LPO, Lomanpreet has been tasked with the responsibility of establisher a presence in the areas she is assigned. By monitoring these areas for potential threats, Lomanpreet discourages potential thieves or other illicit behaviour.

I love getting to work at different sites in my position. I especially find it exciting to work at places that are more high risk. These sites allow me to enhance my skills and discover what my challenges are so that I can strengthen them. In the security industry, you are continuously refining yourself, and Paladin is there for you every step of the way.

Not only does Lomanpreet monitor designated areas, but when conflicts arise, she quickly engaged in the situation in order to effect a resolution. This includes safely detaining and apprehending potential shoplifters, as well as notifying police so they can make an arrest. Lomanpreet also provides the most appropriate approach when dealing with an aggressive person.

By focusing on solving problems without the use of force, Paladin’s LPOs significantly reduce the risk of injury and liability to both clients and staff. This training is provided to Lomanpreet and fellow Paladin LPOs through on-going training programs. LPOs are therefore certified in:

• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
• Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum
• Advanced Security Training
• PPCT Defensive Tactics
• Paladin Response Options Training
• Occupational First Aid Level One

As an LPO, I often have to make quick decisions and Paladin’s training has allowed me to train my mind to handle high pressure. I have also come to discover the importance of communication and the significant role it plays when ensuring a situation is handled appropriately.

In addition to helping Lomanpreet strengthen her communication skills, Paladin also provided her with proper training to safely manage aggressive behaviour. This training has not only increased Lomanpreet’s confidence for the expectations of her position, but she can also apply these defence tactics in her daily life as well.
