With unknown questions and nervous sweats, interviews can be a nerve-wracking experience. However, preparation and practice can help you become more confident when stepping into interview rooms.

Interview Etiquette
Our 12-step selection process can be intimidating for first-time interviewees or those unfamiliar with the requirements of a security guard role. To help you feel confident in acing your next in-person interview, we spoke with our leading talent specialists and recruiters to compile a list of interview etiquette tips.
How to Prepare for a Security Guard Interview
1. Do Your Research
It is important to use the time leading up to your interview to conduct your research. It may be common sense, however, many applicants do not take the proper time to research the company’s website and social media channels. After researching, try answering the following questions:
- What do you admire about the company?
- What motivated you to apply?
These are simple questions, which you can prepare an answer for once you have familiarized yourself with the company.
2. Prepare Your Resume
Take the necessary time to tailor your resume for the security position you have applied for. Ensure it is up to date and reflects your most recent work experience. If there are gaps in your work experience, be prepared to explain this to the interviewer.
3. Prepare Your References
To show your interest in the position and demonstrate your organization skills, come prepared with a list of three to four references. This way, if the interview is a success, then you are one step closer to being hired on.
4. Dress the Part
Dress for the job you want! First impression is everything and it only takes seconds for someone to form an opinion of you.
Avoid wearing:
- Sweat pants
- Sweat shirts
- Runners
- Flip flops, etc.
Instead, dress business smart:
- Dress pants
- Suits
- Skirt
- Blazer
- Dress, etc.
Dressing business smart will allow you to be taken seriously and will also help make a great first impression.
5. Show up on Time
If you are on time, you are late! As a good rule of thumb, you should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview time. This will allow ample time to find parking and avoid you feeling rushed and flustered before the interview begins.
6. Body Language
Actions speak louder than words! Do your best to be mindful of your body language and energy throughout the interview. Slouching and crossed arms will make you look disengaged, while sitting up straight will have you looking attentive and interested. Be sure to always shake your interviewers’ hand and introduce yourself. This is a great sign of respect and professionalism.
7. Show Your Personality
Your interview is your time to shine! Be positive and ensure your personality is conveyed during the interview. Sometimes nerves can get the best of us, so remember to:
- Take a breath before answering a question
- Pause to take your time whenever you may need
8. Ask Questions
Now it is your turn to ask the questions! Prepare a list of questions you may have after conducting your research. Perhaps it is regarding benefits, corporate culture, scheduling, or charity initiatives. Always take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions during an interview.

Very very useful topic for a candidate going to appear for an interview not only for Paladin but it’s very useful for candidates appearing for other agencies too. In a nut shell everything is clearly explained which will definitely give an edge to the candidate after going through the points.

I liked that you talked about how body language can do a lot. I would want to get a security guard that is confident and sure of themselves. That way, I and anyone around them feels safe. Also, it could help prevent people from thinking that they could take them on.

I would add that a common question for Security Guard interviews touches on strengths and weaknesses. Most people can describe their strengths all day, but stumble on weaknesses if they have not given it some thought. Sharing a weakness may seem counterintuitive, but it demonstrates the ability to objectively assess yourself and identify where you can improve. It also provides opportunity to share your personal plan to develop in the weak area. I recommend anyone prepping for an interview to give some thought to both their strengths and weaknesses.
